Are inconsistent golf shots letting you down? It could be your clubs!
A common phrase I hear all golfers use is that “they wish they were more consistent” when it comes to their golf. They would love to see the wayward golf shots eradicated from their game in the quest for shooting lower scores. Perhaps it is not their own fault though; with the wrong equipment, golfers of all levels will seriously struggle for any consistency regardless of how good their swing is.
Every golfer has a different body and a different swing, making it extremely unlikely that clubs bought off the shelf are going to meet their requirements.
To get the most from your clubs you must consider:
– Shaft length – Lie angle
– Shaft characteristics – Grip
– Shaft flexes – Head style
– Loft – Weight
All these elements have a massive influence on how well a club is going to work for you; the most important is arguably the shaft.
During a golf swing, a huge amount of energy is transferred into the shaft and this causes it to bend and twist; we call this the “loading” of the shaft. Depending on the characteristics of your swing and your physical attributes, each golfer will “load” the shaft in a different way.
If any section of the shaft “unloads” at impact in a way that does not match your swing, it will produce massively inconsistent golf shots and there will be nothing you can do to fix it. This is why a correct shaft fitting is essential.
The incorrect lie angle can also wreak havoc with your golf because it will cause the ball to start offline from the target. The wrong grip will cause big problems too: old grips can cause unnecessary tension in the hands and forearms, whereas the wrong size can restrict your control and feel of the club.
